New Roads

I’m going to the river, I’ve got to let you know

Into the mighty Mississippi I’ve got to let you go

This time tomorrow evening, you’ll be resting in the Gulf of Mexico

The son of a bootlegger, who mended his ways

Married a Catholic girl who never let him stray

You left the bayou early, new roads calling you away

Came back home with a freckled beauty, to everyones dismay

I’m going to the river, I’ve got to let you know

Into the mighty Mississippi I’ve got to let you go

This time tomorrow evening, you’ll be resting in the Gulf of Mexico

Driving down I-49, the old south keeps slipping away

But the old ghosts can still be found , in the towns along the way

This place feels like returning home, though I lived my life worlds away

Would my life have been so different, if you chose to stay?

I’m going to the river, I’ve got to let you know

Into the mighty Mississippi I’ve got to let you go

This time tomorrow evening, you’ll be resting in the Gulf of Mexico

Walking around New Roads today, and visiting the family graves

Sitting in the back row of St Marys, I light a candle and pray

Gonna eat at Mama’s kitchen, before I leave New Roads behind

Watch the sun settle over the bayou, and let this heart unwind

I’m going to the river, I’ve got to let you know

Into the mighty Mississippi, I’ve got to let you go

This time tomorrow evening, you’ll be resting in the Gulf of Mexico
